<JudyA> Hello and welcome, to Joe's fans from around the world, to the Third Joe Chat at the Joe's Corner Chatroom on the Joe Lando Web Page with Joe once again! This will be a moderated chat. That means that only Joe and I will be able to send messages to the chatroom, unless there is extra time at the end to take more questions. You can, however, write personal messages to each other by double clicking on the other person's name. Do not do this though with Joe or me during the chat because we will not read them and they will clutter up the workspace. Joe will be on the phone with me. I will read the questions to him and type his answers back to you. Some of the questions have been edited, to combine similar topics. Sit back and relax, Joe should be here shortly. <JoeLando has joined the chat room.> <JudyA> Hi, Joe! Thanks for being here today for the Third Joe Lando Web Page Chat - It's great to have you here. Everyone wants to thank you for sharing some of your time with your fans and we all would like to know how you have all been and what you, Kirsten, Jack, Christian, and Kate have been up to lately. <JoeLando> We all were sick prior to the holidays like everybody else was. Jack had some time off from school for Christmas vacation. We just enjoyed hanging out, being together. Kate is growing like a weed. She's standing, getting ready to walk, and Christian is turning into a real character. My kids are so different from each other, yet the same. He is a beautiful little boy with a great personality and he has a very devilish little smile. Jack learned to ride his two-wheel bicycle last week. I taught him in about two hours and it was done. Now he has the ability and the freedom to ride his two-wheel bicycle with me. And he managed to learn without falling once because that's just Jack. Christian on the other hand is not a careful boy. He crashes and doesn't care. He's just like me. Jack is smart and very careful. Christian is bright too but just more daring. <Nancy T, Maine> Thanks for giving us some time before you head over to New Zealand. That is quite a move. Why are you thinking of moving to New Zealand? Are you looking for acting jobs there or other kinds of work? What does the rest of your family think about moving so far away? Are you keeping your place in California? Good luck and I hope you find something interesting. I can't wait to see you on screen again. <JudyA> Similar questions were asked by Vicki P; Linda B, London; Emma T, Sweden; Nanlee, Fairfax, Virginia; Liz P, Harvard, Illinois; Joanne, Illinois; Liz, France; Sarah Murray, St. Paul, Minnesota. <JoeLando> My wife was born in New Zealand and raised there until the age of seven before her father's job moved them here. I've always been curious about New Zealand. I loved Australia. Basically, if I go, it would be within a two-year window. I always try to have a plan I try to follow and not to scatter my thoughts all over the place. I am going to go first for a short 10-day trip, probably in March now because my agent said to stay back home for pilot season. I will go down there with my uncle to check it out, get a good feel for it, see if I think I could live there. I'm looking for on that trip investment properties. I believe the real estate market there will do well over the next 10 years. I want to buy green bananas, things that will ripen and be good later on. Also, while I am there, I will look for a place we could rent for a month or two before we actually move down there. My plan is to build a dream home of sorts down there. There's a television and movie industry down there, although it is limited, I know, but I think that those limits are almost put upon me here too, because of the amount of people there is to do the work. And, if I don't work in the entertainment business, so be it. It's not so much that I'm wanting to leave the US for any particular reason, other than I'm searching for a quality of life for my family and myself and basically a simpler life, something like we had in Vancouver, but without the rain. <Montse, Germany> Hi, Joe. Thank you for taking the time to chat with us today and all the best to you and your entire family in 2004. If you would eventually decide to work in New Zealand, in the best of circumstances and with the possibility to choose, which genre would you prefer, feature film, TV, movie, or a series? And directly related to the first part of the question, one more thing, which role do you dream of playing at this stage of your career? <JoeLando> I think I would rather do series work but honestly I don't really have a dream role or a dream idea of the work that I do anymore. There's less art in my work and more commerce, a means to an end, and that's why I do it now. I've lost touch with the old feeling that acting used to give me and I don't know if that's because I'm older and have responsibilities that I take very seriously and I'm less self-absorbed. I think when you're an actor you have to be very self-absorbed. These people like Tom Cruz talk about how much they love their children but then spend huge amounts of time away from them while they're out doing their acting job. And somebody like Tom obviously never has to work again. And I am only using him as an example, I don't mean to be beating up on him, but he typifies a lot of actors who have done well and continue to carry on with their career because their career is really the most important thing in their life. I worked really hard for a long time and planned wisely, I believe, or as best as I could, and tried to give myself the opportunity, if I could, I could leave this party when I chose to, not when they asked me to go. <Ruby, Australia> Hi, Joe! It is Ruby in Australia, I am sure you will remember this place. Well, at the moment I am in Noosa and, from the news, I feel you are heading in the right direction. I think of you, Kirsten, and the children often. Unfortunately, your latest works have not come this way, so maybe when you are in this vicinity your tremendous talent will be noted and we can all be happy again. Cheers and Hooroo! <JoeLando> Hi, Ruby, and love from everyone in the family. I'm glad you're in Noosa; I wish I could be too. It's a wonderful place and I hope you're having a great time. < Sue B, New York City> Why did you make the decision to move to NZ so soon after you worked so hard to move into the new house? Will you be looking for work in the acting field - if not - what new career are you contemplating? Joe, please take a look at the books: Angels & Demons and The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown: If either one would be made into a movie, the description of the main character is a perfect one of you and in my opinion the role would be a great one. We will miss you very much and hope that we will have the chance to see you on TV or a movie screen. Please keep in touch, no matter what. We are all interested in your doings as well as those of your wonderful family. <JoeLando> When I moved into this house, when I bought this house, it was a plan I was starting to set in motion, to move into this home, which is more a style for my family. The other house was kind of big and a good real estate deal at the time to buy that house and then two years later sell it and get this one, fix it up, and most likely, because this is a little smaller home, located closer to town, close to the beach, if I choose to, I can rent it out faster and it has all the bells and whistles that people look for in rental property. My wife just got me the Da Vinci Code for Christmas and I haven't started to read it yet because I'm still finishing up the small details in the house, i.e., getting my office together, finishing up the electrical work that is here, and doing the landscaping. <Ann, UK> Could it be possible to give us some more delicious recipes before you go to New Zealand? <JoeLando> I'll be working on them actually with another little adventure that kind of ties into this. My friend Danny Bonaduce stopped by last night with his wife Gretchen. And he and I have always talked about opening a restaurant together. And recently he purchased a part of a restaurant and it is doing very well for him, and with a partner of his on that one. We were thinking of doing a three-way partnership on the next adventure. We actually looked at a space last night. It's really very pretty but we have to really grind the numbers out and see if it's doable and still keep it in the plan, that Bonaduce has also talked about going down to New Zealand. And he talked about doing a radio show down there. He now has one of the top radio shows here in Los Angeles and his contract is up in less than two years, which fits in with the New Zealand schedule. So, even if we open a restaurant here together, it can run itself because it will have the management in place. We'll always have ties to the US. My parents live 300 or 400 miles away in Arizona, my sister lives 3,000 miles away in Chicago. I only see them once in a while now because her kids are grown up and she's busy doing her own thing and my parents don't like to travel much anymore. It's gotten to the point where 6,000 miles is no different than 600 miles. It's all in your mind. I will try and pull out more recipes but as of right now I do zero cooking. < Monika, Switzerland> Did you keep something from the DQ set, like clothes or your Tomahawk or anything else? Do you know if Higher Ground has been sold to a TV Station in Germany? We're still waiting for it to air. <JoeLando> I have my outfit, my jacket and my pants, a couple of sets of the beads. I of course kept my tomahawk and my belt, and that's it. Other people made off with just about everything. They picked that set clean. I thought Higher Ground was sold to Germany, France, and Italy, but I have been out of touch with the people involved at Lions Gate and Paramount. Once the show is cancelled, they move on to other actors. It's the nature of the business. It's kind of like: "We love you, we love you, what's your name again?" <Gail G, Canada> Do you plan to audition for the new Stargate spin-off, Atlantis? That sounds cool. <JoeLando> I saw the breakdown for that, which goes up to casting agents, descriptions of what they are looking for. And they had the description of the lead character of that show as 50s, tough as nails, looks good in a buzz cut. I'm touch as nails, I'm not 50, and I don't look good in a buzz cut. So I don't think I'll get the opportunity to do that one. <Alix, Scotland> Hi!! Joe. Hope you and your family are well. I want to thank you for all the wonderful television you have provided, but especially for Higher Ground. It has had a huge impact on my life. I am 18 and have suffered from a severe anxiety and stress disorder for six years and I really connected with aspects of each of the characters. I have been truly inspired. It has made me feel so dignified. Was it hard to film the scenes involving such emotional topics? Did it affect you off-screen? <JoeLando> First of all, I'm so happy that the show could help you and you could find something in it that gave you some peace. I believe that we were making a really good show and everyone's heart was in it. It came together because of everyone's great efforts. It's people like you that made what I do so much more important than just any old acting job. It kind of broke my heart when the show went down and especially the way it was handled and I'm sorry that we couldn't have carried on and done a few more years of it. <Kelly, France> First of all Joe, I wish you, Kirsten, and your three marvelous children a happy new year 2004. My question is as follows: Do you have a project, a movie, to be made with Jane Seymour? <JoeLando> Happy New Year, Merry Christmas, and No. I saw Jane recently to work on the DVD collection but we have no projects going together. <Joesefine, Sweden> Do you have a lot of your fans, like me (I'm 14)? <JoeLando> I did but now they're 24! <Joan, Manchester, England> All my best wishes go with you and your family for 2004. What is your favourite film of all time and why? You are always so convincing when you play your characters. How long does it take you to learn a script? <JoeLando> Favorite movie would have to be the Godfather, Part 1 or Part 2. They are both kind of equal to me. And I always look at those movies for story structure, character development. They're really simple but sometimes simple is the best. I learn scripts relatively quickly because of my days on the soaps. I think because of that pace that you have to maintain on a soap and television in general, I forget them as quickly. < Rossella, Italy > Ciao Joe, thanks for this chat and best wishes to you and your family .. There is a difference between being in love and playing in love. Is love difficult to play for you? Are you an authoritarian father? What is the relationship with your children? <JoeLando> It's easy for me to play in love. I've always told my wife this. It's not because I'm trying to flatter her, when my character has to be involved with the other person or thinking about his love for somebody, I think about my wife, I think about my children. I am a very authoritative father. I'm strict but not too strict to crush their spirit or take away their individuality. From what I learned from Higher Ground and the research we did with that and from what I see with kids now, because I watch the teenagers and stuff in the neighborhood, kids need love and they need boundaries and they need to have the word "no" exist in their vocabulary. And they want that or otherwise they are just wild and getting into trouble. <Monique, France:> Joe, I am Monique and I am sad and upset you move to New Zealand! I wonder WHY but I know a lot of fans ask you about, and I am waiting your answer! What about COMBUSTION? Joe, you know all your fans love you very much and they don't want to lose you! You are the best actor! We have the same love for the animals. Will you take Billie and Emma with you when you go to New Zealand? Monique, hello, I am Joe. I've not yet made the move, so everyone can stop panicking. "Combustion" is still being worked on in Post Production. I still have to go into the studio and do the finishing touches on it for voiceover stuff. But I think if you enjoyed the flood movie and "Devil Winds," you'll enjoy "Combustion." It was a fun movie to make because the folks I was working with were having a great time too. Billie and Emma of course will go to New Zealand with us. It's the logistics of getting them there that I will have to work on. < Brenda S, Canada> What makes you go after the things you want in life? <JoeLando> There's just this invisible force that pushes me in directions. I don't know what it is but, if it exists long enough, I follow that instinct or whatever you want to call it. When I was 18 and growing up in Chicago, it was something pulling me away from my family, away from where I grew up. I can't put it into words but something pulled me here and I knew what I wanted to do and that was it. I couldn't deny it. <Jennifer J, USA> I would like to know what your favorite Dr. Quinn episode is. <JoeLando> Because of the entire episode, the wedding one. Because of all the characters involved, because of the production value, because of everything, that is the quintessential Dr. Quinn. Everyone had a really well-developed part in the wedding episode. There is very little I can be critical about on that one. <Mélanie, France> Hi Joe, you are going to New Zealand. Is Kirsten happy to go back where she was born? <JoeLando> Yes, she is excited to go back but mostly we are just excited about the unknown. <Penni, Lumberton, NC> What was your most memorable acting job, and why? Do you stay in touch with your former OLTL co-stars? If so, who? How has becoming a father changed your life? What do you look for in a part when considering taking that role? And what wouldn't you do if asked to? Who would you like to work with that you haven't thus far? Who would you like to work with again? <JoeLando> Well, just always the role of Sully has to be the most memorable because it changed my life, it changed my career. For good or bad, it changed it. Brian Tarantina is still a very close friend of mine. Kirsten calls him our eldest. Less sleep, more to do, not enough time. There's too many days in the hour. I don't look for anything specific. I look to avoid anything that would embarrass my family or me. And, beyond that, you can't concern yourself with too much more. I wouldn't play Michael Jackson in a movie of the week. I think he is a lying pedophile. I'd like to work with Catherine Bell from JAG again. She was great. I had such a great, easy time working with her I would love the chance to work with Paul Newman <Stephanie, Calgary, Canada> In what ways are you similar and in what ways are you different than Sully? <JoeLando> We look a lot alike, except now I have short hair and the blonde is grey. < Emma T, Sweden> We Swedish fans wish you all the best luck and fortune, both professionally with your job and privately with your family, wife Kristen and the children, Jack, Chris and little Kate, and with the dogs! Thanks for this moment. It really shows that you care about your fans. It really means a lot to me. This is one of the best moments of in my life! Which event is the one thing at Paramount Ranch that you'll always remember as something special from the whole Dr. Quinn series? Do you ever get tired of everyone talking about Dr. Quinn with you, or seeing you as just Sully? What does Jane Seymour mean to you today? Do you two only meet when working or at other occasions as well? <JoeLando> Most memorable part of working at Paramount Ranch, the first week of driving up there and thinking, my, God, I've got the perfect job. This is always what I wanted to do, be in the mountains, outdoors, working with a beautiful woman. Jane, James, Kirsten, and I are good friends and we see them every so often, whether it be at their house or out to dinner, and Kirsten always seems to run into her, at the park with the kids or shopping, it's kind of funny. <Nanlee, Fairfax, Virginia> Would you like to have a role in a big screen movie? <JoeLando> Sure, who wouldn't? I'm an actor. My job is to act, whether it be in TV or movies, and one is not more important than the other to me. <Silvia B, Italy> First of all, a big Good luck for your trip in New Zealand. My question is, lately in the cinema there are more and more films about the past times, like Master and Commander or The Last Samurai. Is there a character like that you would like to play or an era you'd like to make a film? <JudyA> A similar question was asked by Josette, France. <JoeLando> I love Mutiny on the Bounty, the original and even the remake with Mel Gibson and Anthony Hopkins -- all three, from Charles Laughton and Clark Gable to Marlon Brando, and the next one. Mutiny on the Bounty, much like "Master" and "Commander," I guess, is a great period in history, great characters to play, and I would love that role of Fletcher Christian. Chances are they won't make a fourth version. <Liz P, Harvard, Illinois: Since the end of Higher Ground, we have missed your weekly screen presence. Are you looking for a series to act in again? We hope you will still keep in touch with us through Judy no matter where you move. <JoeLando> I'm back in line with all the unemployed series actors looking for whatever work we can. With fewer movies of the week and more of the Generation Y, Z, whatever, there's very little parts for people like me. And I will always let Judy know what is going on with me. <Heather, Wisconsin> Hi Joe... Just wondering what your plans are for 2004? Are you and Kirsten planning on having any more gorgeous children in the future? What ever your plans are, I respect and support them... Good Luck in 2004... <JoeLando> We talk about a fourth but right now I really want to have my wife to myself for a little bit. <Amy, Thailand> As an actor, do you purposely seek a certain type of role? Action? Loner? Romantic type? I have noticed your last few TV movies seem to be more "family friendly" than some others in your past. Do you have strong convictions about doing "family friendly films" now that you have children? <JoeLando> I think I'm subconsciously leaning that way. <Douchka, France> Joe, congratulations on all of the presents 2003 offered you and my best wishes for 2004 to bring you and your family everything you crave for. Good luck with New Zealand. You have always shown much interest in the environment, in its protection. Your last movies show it. Where would the best region of the world be to make a Sundance dream of yours come true? Why? What would you make out of it? <JoeLando> I don't know how to answer that one. < Sarah, Maine> Here is my question: I have been a fan of yours since Dr. Quinn and Higher Ground. Best wishes to you and your family. Do you think there will be another Dr. Quinn movie or a Higher Ground reunion? <JoeLando> Jane and I would love to do another Dr. Quinn if a great script came along and there were people willing to put the money up to make it, we'd be there in a heartbeat and so would, I think, a lot of the cast members. As far as Higher Ground goes, I'm sorry to say I don't see anything in the future for that <Patty H, New York: What is your professional goal for the next few years? Would you like to do more TV movies, series, or soaps? Or perhaps directing or producing (a la Higher Ground)? Do your children show any particular talent for acting yet? You said once that Jack watched your movie (I think it was Killer Flood) and knew the dialogue of all the characters. Has he indicated that he wants to do what Daddy does? <JoeLando> First of all, Jack shows a predisposition for the film business, that's for sure. Not one that I encourage, but again, he's a pretty artistic child and I would never deny him of it or try to stop him or discourage him. The others are too young. And I'd love to do a series again for about two or three years and then kind of ride into the sunset and go to the next chapter of my life. I have something I'm working on with a friend to produce. But again, that's me and 5 million other people. <Nancy Streb, USA> I have two questions: When you are filming a movie during the day, how do you darken the set if the scene is supposed to take place at night (especially if it is an outdoor scene)? When you have a scene to do or are on a talk show, do you get nervous? <JoeLando> First of all, I'm always nervous about talk shows. I don't really think I'm good at them, nor do I really like them. As far as darkening a set, most of the time you have to shoot it at nighttime if it's outdoors. There's a way to cheat it, which they did in '50s movies, they used to do it all the time, they'd turn on the headlights in the middle of the day. There is a way of shooting, they call it "day for night," and we only did it once on DQ because it limits the area you can move in, usually. And they just basically darken the whole picture and flood the actors with bright, bright lights, and they make the rest of the picture very dark by the exposure of the film in a certain way. <Lilian V, Germany> As a father of two boys and a girl as well, I suppose that your boys are now at the age to ask many things about everything. I'm interested in your way to raise up your children in religious matters or is this more the part of Kirsten? <JoeLando> We have no real structure, we don't go to church. We believe in God but we don't have an organized religion so to speak. <Clara, Sardinia, Italy> Hi Joe...First of all, thanks for chatting with us!!! During their lifetime, people must face some difficult proof...my question is: What was your most difficult proof and what's your life's philosophy? Thanks again...you are a great actor! Bye. <JoeLando> I'm not sure what you mean but thanks for being here, Clara. <Sandra, Italy> Hi Joe, in Italy there are a lot of fans to you. Have you in your projects to go to in Italy and meet all us? You know our country? It's very beautiful!!!! I want you to know that with your films you give me the chance to know two new friends and that you are what glue us together. <JoeLando> I would love the opportunity to go to Italy with my family, whether to work or for vacation. It's beautiful there. I have family there still but I have no plans for the immediate future. <Nuala, Ireland> Hi, Joe. I really enjoy your work. I just saw the Higher Ground series for the first time this summer and was really impressed with it. My question is, did you enjoy the experience of producing Higher Ground and would you consider getting involved in the production end of things again or has the way the distribution of HG was mishandled put you off venturing into that area? <JoeLando> It put me off for a couple of years, which is kind of why I dropped out of sight for a while, but I'm over it I love being a task master and I think producing is something I enjoy. <JudyA> Joe will be right back. <A brief intermission> <JudyA> Joe is back. <Sarah Murray, St. Paul, Minnesota> Are you doing any auditions for this year's pilot season? Thank you for sharing the photos of your family with us. Since your children are growing and changing so quickly, do you have any new photos (Christmas 2003?) to share with us? <JoeLando> I just auditioned for "Lost in Space" and pilot season just started. Soon I'll have new pictures and will get them to Judy. <Christine, France> Are you teaching Jack to read? <JoeLando> Jack is in kindergarten and learning to read now and I work with him, basically small words. He is also learning a little bit of math and having a great time. <Britany G, Greeneville, Tennessee> I would like to know how it was working with Jane Seymour!?!? <JudyA> Also Liz from France had a similar question. <JoeLando> It was fantastic working with Jane. The more time that passes and when I work now away from the Dr. Quinn set, I realize -- and I told Jane this, to her face -- how much she taught me and how much I learned just being around her because she knows this business extremely well, it's second nature to her, and she is better at it than I am. She plays the game card great, and just as far as acting and lighting and all the things one has to be aware of, she knows it, and so do I now. <Jamie, Chicago: Hi. I'm a HUGE fan of your work. Recently on Dec. 9th, my Chocolate lab had pups and I named one of them "Sully" in honor of your beloved character. My question to you is: If you had one single piece of advice for someone that was interested in a career in acting, what would it be? I wish you and your family all the best and also with your journey to New Zealand. Thanks and I appreciate your time. <JoeLando> It's important to be driven and focused, if you truly want to be an actor. It's a tough road, full of sacrifice and disappointment. And that's not to discourage you, that's to let you know you have to have a thick skin or be naive enough, like me, to think that someone eventually will give you a job. It's very competitive and always good to have a plan b or c or d. <JoeLando> (Joe has given me permission to omit the statement he made as to why he disassociated himself with the DQ Times and its reunion.) <JoeLando> I want to thank everyone for participating in this chat and for all their support of my family and me and I want to wish everyone the best in 2004, with health and happiness to everyone. Thank you and bye for now. <JudyA> Thanks everyone for being here today with Joe and me. The transcript will be up as soon as I can get it corrected and formatted. See you all next time! <JoeLando has left the chatroom. > <UKAnn> JudyA, Please say a big Thank you to Joe for me. <Guest3721> Thanks Joe and Judy! <smlchng> it was great <dqfan> Wonderful chat, Judy, thanks! <Loderite> Thanks for this chance. <smlchng> We learned a lot. <Alix> Thank you, thank you, thank you. As ever, you did it good girl!!!! <Tersee> Had a hard time getting in, but it was well worth it when I finally did - Thanks Judy and Joe! <Silvia> Thanks Joe and Judy <Liz921> Great chat - Thank you Judy and Joe <sandra> Thanks to Joe and a kiss from Italy. <smlchng> He is so open about everything that was asked of him. <Alix> Thanks to Joe also, it was a great chat. <smlchng> Judy, I love you! <monique> Thank you Joe <Nanlee> I really appreciated Joe's candidness. <SarahMN> JudyA and Joe, thanks so much for the chat <EmmaKate> Thanks for this moment to chat with Joe!
