Interview with Joe Lando
Regis and Kathie Lee on Wednesday, April 22, 1998
from Animal Kingdom, Orlando, Florida

REGIS: Not many people would mind frolicking on the frontier with this guy, he plays the very sexy Sully on Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman. He's known for, you know, that terrific mane of long hair, well guess what? He went out and he got it all cut off.

AUDIENCE: Awwww....screams

REGIS: So let us look at that long hair one more time .. . and now for the first time on t.v. with his new do, here's the new Joe Lando.

AUDIENCE: Cheers and screams and claps

REGIS: Hi Joe, how are you? Very nice Joe.

KATHIE LEE: Yes, you got a nice head of hair, we all knew it.

REGIS: How long did it take you to .... (crowd screams). Let's do the obligatory split screen, get that out of the way right now. Joe you look right over there ...

JOE: Alright

REGIS: Look, we'll get that all set up and you'll see the tremendous difference now between his long hair (shows picture of Joe with long hair beside Joe now).

JOE: You never know if your ears are going to be too big or if you're going to have a bald spot.

KATHIE LEE: How many years has your hair been that long?

JOE: Six...almost seven.

KATHIE LEE: Yeah

JOE: I grew it specifically for Dr. Quinn in the hopes that if the show didn't get picked up I could always just cut it and change the look but er,

REGIS: Yeah, but it did get picked up, but now what are you going to do?

JOE: I think they're going to wig me possibly ..

laughter

REGIS: But Joe, why cut it now?

JOE: Um, six years of, it was just time ..

REGIS: Was it a pain in the neck to have that long hair?

JOE: It was sometimes. You go into Marshall Fields to go Christmas shopping and they're following you around making sure you're not stealing things (Regis and Kathie laugh) and er, I've got a baby on the way and stuff, so ...

REGIS: Congratulations

JOE: Thank you very much.

REGIS: Did you put your hair up at night?

JOE: I'd actually put it in a pony tail to get it out of my face

REGIS: Really? Oh my gosh!

JOE: But I've got a new dog and the pup would get caught up in my hair and it was just mess.

KATHIE LEE: And your wife?

JOE: There she is

REGIS: Really, where is she?

JOE: Way over there

REGIS: Oh way over there (camera on Kirsten) Hi Darling.

JOE: Eight months pregnant.

REGIS: Oh, is that right?

JOE: Thank God you sent a private jet for us (laughs)

( Someone says something about he could be a stand up comic)

REGIS: We did? So you're having the baby in June, huh?

JOE: June 5th is the date

REGIS: How did you meet her anyway?

JOE: Nine years ago she was a cashier at a restaurant that I was a chef in and as soon as she turned 18, she was legal, I took her out on a date. That's kismit.

REGIS: Were you a good chef?

JOE: I wasn't bad. I could hold my own. I cook at home, we have a really small kitchen, actually our house is right next door to Drew Carey's. We live so close that when he sneezes I say God bless you and we've never said hello to each other, it's just typical LA kind of attitude but we got to meet over here.

REGIS: Two sex symbols living side by side

JOE: I was inspired by Drew actually ...

REGIS: Only in LA

KATHIE LEE: Well now, what's the future of Dr. Quinn. Medicine Woman, do you know? Have you been picked up for next season?

JOE: We're in a holding pattern, that was another reason, I didn't know if the show was going to get picked up and as an actor you've got to be always looking for your next gig.

KATHIE LEE: That's the worst part of this business though isn't it?

JOE: Yeah, just waiting and waiting and we got a little cocky about this for the past six years, we always got picked up that season and so we put shows away for the future and this year, they're figuring out what they want to do over there ..

REGIS: See Miss, don't get too cocky, understand? The poorhouse is just around the corner. So you're building a home in Phoenix now huh?

JOE: Building a house there with a great kitchen so we hope to have family and friends visiting us all the time.

REGIS: But you really went to great lengths to check out to make sure this site to make sure it's the right one.

JOE: We actually bought the property right after we got married and then took the trailer from work that I have there and dropped it on the property and lived there for ten days, we didn't want to make a mistake. Every morning we woke up and I walked around the yard, I just loved it, it's the first time in my life I've been able to say this is mine ...

KATHIE LEE: (singing) This land is your land ...

JOE: Exactly, very important.

REGIS: You also have a movie coming out right?

JOE: In September, um I was actually last December I was shooting Dr. Quinn and a movie with Charlie Sheen and Martin Sheen, directed by Brett Michaels called No Code of Conduct and I um, I look quite different there too. My hair was really long and ...

REGIS: Were you a good guy or a bad guy? Sounds like you were a bad guy.

JOE: I'm a very slimy gangster, thug ...

KATHIE LEE: Drug dealer type ...

JOE: Yeah. It's a good movie. It's a you know, a shoot ‘em up action kind of movie which was loads of fun doing.

REGIS: Nice change of pace for you.

JOE: Hm Mm - great people and we shot it in Arizona which wasn't quite as hot as here, I'm melting

REGIS: And that will be coming out in September. So you've been on hiatus for a while because you've been doing a lot of things. You've been making a movie, you've been skiing ...

JOE: Just got back from Aspen skiing, trying to get all the stuff in before the baby's born.

REGIS: Your wife, isn't skiing?

JOE: No she didn't ski, no, no, no, but there's shopping and there's a spa

KATHIE LEE: There's a lot to do in Aspen

JOE: And Little Nell is very nice, she treats us well ...

REGIS: Now when you look back at six or seven years of Dr. Quinn, what are the highlights that come to your mind? Is there one show in particular that you really loved doing that identified your character more than the others?

JOE: I've done a couple - there was one last year where I'd fallen off a cliff - it was our cliff hanger, the following year I come back and I was out in the woods by myself and it was a whole show, my stuff was interacting with nobody, you know, it was wild, I read the script and I had one line .(whispers) "Michaela" but it was hard working by yourself, crawling around, I ate worms and did all kind of weird things ..

REGIS: You were just Sully, lost in the wilderness.

JOE: I was just Sully, all by myself.

REGIS: I love your new hair do Joe

KATHIE LEE: You look great. I'm happy for you and the new baby

REGIS: Thank you so much for coming by

JOE: Thank you so much for having me, I've had a wonderful time here ...

AUDIENCE: Clapping, screaming, cheering
