The Race /201 (TR)
Sully took Mike to the reservation on his horse because he knew Snow Bird was giving her a horse, Flash. He made her a saddle with her name on it as a gift. While out riding, Mike said she wanted to ride Flash in the coming race, and when she protested that she was only thinking about it, Sully said he knew that she had already made up her mind. He dressed in a suit and attended a social with Mike, and told her to pick her battles when Loren and Dr. Cassidy refused to let her ride in the race. He refused to ride Flash for her because he disagreed with races such as this one. In town, he stopped Hank from attacking Robert E, and on another day, stopped Hank from whipping Flash, saying that you do not hit animals or people. Sully finally offered to ride Flash in the race but Mike decided to ride. Sully coached her on dress, riding style, and helped the ruse that got her into the race. Sully told Colleen that it was just a race and the sun would come up tomorrow. After Mike won and gave her prize away, Sully picked a rose from the horse's bouquet and gave it to Mike in a romantic gesture.
Saving Souls/202 (SS)
Sully helped Kid Cole bring in a cattle rustler and helped defend Cole when the brothers come to town. He threw his tomahawk, knocking a gun out of one's hand, and then fought them. He asked Cole why he was acting in such a way as if he wanted to die; Cole confessed he shot an unarmed man, and Sully told him that mistakes happen and one must go on. In the last stand against the rustler's brothers, he used a bow and arrow to help defend Cole. Meanwhile, Sully agreed to be best man for Robert E and Grace's wedding, and gave Mike a most appealing look. At the end, he took her arm and with a lilting step to the music, escorted her back down the aisle.
Sanctuary/203 (S)
Sully knew of Ralph Jennings and his abuse of both alcohol and Dorothy. He offered to protect Dorothy when Jennings comes to the homestead. He observed the trial that frees Dorothy. Meanwhile, Sully watched as Cloud Dancing and Snow Bird dealt with the tribal custom of bringing the widow of his brother to the teepee as another wife, and found the solution when he learned another man wanted to make the widow his wife. Sully taught Mike to fish, complete with a discussion of worms and love. He told her of the Cheyenne belief that once, man and woman were one being and one day the gods grew angry and cut it in half with a tomahawk, and ever since then, man and woman have been trying to get back together again.
The Orphan Train/204 (TOT)
Mike and the Reverend became close while caring for a group of orphans and he asked for Mike in marriage. Sully told Mike that she should think about what it would do to those already around her and she responded that no one else had offered a commitment for her and her children. Sully answered by telling her if all she wants out of a marriage is marriage, then she found the right man. He refused to take in an orphan and said his life style would not support a child. When Mike turned the Reverend down and sent the orphans away, she included Sully in the plans for a picnic and looked to him for affirmation that closing the clinic and ignoring chores for one day would not hurt, to which he agreed.
Note: a small contradiction in Sully's character because he offered to take McCall's baby (CL) but here was much more belligerent when Mike asked him if he would take an orphan.
The Offering/206 (TOff)
Sully brought Mike to the reservation to treat typhus and while there, Matthew became ill in town. He tried to help Mike return to town but the army stopped them. He told Cloud Dancing that he was sorry that his people brought disease to the Cheyenne, and Cloud Dancing said that Sully was a good man and they were still brothers. Cloud Dancing helped them escape back to town, but Matthew was fine. He and Mike confronted the army sergeant about the infected blankets that caused the disease. At the patriotic celebration later, Sully sat with family during Brian's performance and the picnic. Mike thanked Sully for supporting her at the reservation to which he replied that he was not that strong. During Horace's rendition of the Declaration of Independence, Sully showed Mike how it misrepresented the Indians and remained with her and the family during the fireworks.
The Incident/205 (TI)
Sully and several Cheyenne were hunting when he heard a shot ring out. He ran through the woods and found a dead brave, and the remaining Cheyenne told him they saw threw white men, one of whom shot the brave. Sully went to town and confronted Jake, who of Horace and Loren matched the description. Jake denied his actions. Dorothy printed a story and Sully told her she did not have all the facts, but then said she should not print another story because that would only inflame the situation. Just then, Black Kettle, Cloud Dancing and other Cheyenne come to town. Sully tried to diffuse the situation, translating from Black Kettle that they wanted Jake to come to a tribal counsel for judgement. Jake refused and the Cheyenne rode away. Mike said to Sully that since Horace denied that the incident happened, she believed it did not happen. Sully said he believed the Cheyenne because they do not lie. Sully was with Mike at the clinic that night when Jake was kidnapped, and he wanted to ride to the reservation immediately, but Mike convinced him to wait till morning and they could speak to the town. Enough town members agreed with Mike that Sully was the only chance they had to rescue Jake. Sully went to the reservation, and although mistrusted by the Dog Soldiers, he confronted Jake and got him to tell the truth. But Sully and Cloud Dancing fought because Sully asked him why Cloud Dancing could not stop hating, when it was he who taught Sully not to hate. Back in town, Horace finally told the truth and Mike realized Sully was telling the truth. At the tribal council, speaking in Cheyenne, English and sign language, Sully explained how he was caught between the whites and the Cheyenne, and that he stood with the truth. After the truth was explained, he argued against war saying many on both sides will be killed. When the dog soldiers argued for war, he handed a knife to Cloud Dancing and said if there is to be war, let it start now with me. Cloud Dancing refused to attack Sully, and Black Kettle settled the dispute. Sully translated what Black Kettle was saying to Mike, Jake and the others. Sully witnessed the gifts Jake brought for the Cheyenne widow and insisted Jake give his watch as well. Sully and Cloud Dancing embraced in forgiveness.
Halloween/207 (H1)
While at dinner at the homestead, Sully explained the Cheyenne spirit, Unkatahe, who watches over human souls. Sully wanted to fix up the homestead, but Mike refused when she was unsettled by visions of Abagail. Sully did not understand, and then refused to fix a rocking horse he had made for Hannah. Later, off screen, he fixed the horse and then gave it to Mike at the town's Halloween party, which he did not attend. The next morning, while playing with the kids, Mike told them she wanted to fix up the homestead.
Where the Heart Is/208/209 (WTHI)
Brian ran into the church graveyard where Sully was visiting Abagail and Hannah's grave and invited him to Sunday dinner. He asked Sully why he visited the graves each Sunday, and Sully told him that he had a made a promise. As Mike was preparing to leave for an emergency trip to Boston, Sully told her that he was born on a ship somewhere between England and America (in 1835). His father was a farmer, who died shortly after arriving in New York, when Sully was too young to know him. According to Sully's mother, his father's heart just gave out because he had to take odd jobs away from the land. His mother drowned in the Hudson River when he was 10 and he headed west, all alone. After Mike left for Boston Sully followed his recurring dream and followed her. He found himself out of place and Mike attracted to William. At first, he refused to wear "proper" clothes but he did wear a tux to a ball at Elizabeth's insistence, but wanted to leave when William and Mike danced extensively. The kids convinced him to stay and taught him etiquette. He purchased a suit, took Mike to dinner, drank champagne, danced a waltz, took her to the opera, and attended a lecture where she was the featured speaker. He overheard William's offer of marriage and, when he asked her if she was going to marry William, she became defiant and he stormed off. Mike followed him onto the train and in answer to her question about why he came to Boston, he finally confessed that he loved her. As the train started, she hurried off. Sully went on to Colorado, sure he would never see her again. But she returned, ran to his arms and confessed her love as well.
(Comments: Beth Sullivan said in an interview that Sully was 35 in 1870. His exact birthday is not known. The death of Sully's mother is given an ominous tone. Although he refused to wear proper clothes in Boston, he did clean up and dress in a suit for Mike's birthday. Abagail's grave marker says May 5, 1865.)
Giving Thanks/211 (GT)
Returning from their Boston trip, Sully escorted Mike and the family back to the homestead and they found that the drought had become worse. Mike wanted to go to the clinic, but Sully said he would show her his world if they went for a walk. They discussed courtship during the walk and to Mike it meant talking and to Sully it meant courting and sparking, but Mike was clearly nervous. On another walk hunting turkey, Sully showed her the tracks turkeys make, and they had a conversation about lone wolf turkeys that was also about them. Mike invited him back to town to attend the meeting about Thanksgiving plans and Sully said he did not like meetings, but he agreed to go with her. As they walked in the church, Loren, Jake, Hank and the Reverend all had reactions to the couple. As the Reverend said a prayer, Sully did not bow his head and Mike noticed. On another walk, Sully showed Mike one of his lean-tos, saying he liked to see the stars at night and had a place to get out of the rain. As they sat and talked, Sully asked if they had in enough in common and Mike said she hoped so, but they were thinking about their differences. When the town suffers from the drought, Sully showed Mike how the Cheyenne plant crops that survive with little water and other methods of surviving drought. She tried to get the town to accept Cheyenne help but they refused. Later, when the town was digging for water, both tried again to convince them to accept alternative methods and again they refused. Mike and Sully fought, she saying the town could accept new ways and he saying she cannot get other people to change their ways. The fight ended as he stalked off and she shouted that perhaps they did not have enough in common. After Sully ignored her in town, and he reflected alone, Mike tracked him in the woods. She apologized, saying they did have a lot in common: the children and doing what was right. They agreed that they were frightened because they never had to depend on anyone before. Mike said she knew where she wanted them to be but did not know how to get there. Sully said that if she was willing to set off without a map, he knew where to start and took her to the mountain top that was his refuge, where he went to think when he lost his way, and a place that he had never shown anyone, including Abagail. For the Thanksgiving dinner, Sully brought Cloud Dancing and the Cheyenne as well as food for the town. Again, he did not bow his head during the Reverend's prayer, but did for Cloud Dancing's prayer. Sully was ready to fight when Hank appeared and made snide comments about the Cheyenne. When it began to rain, Sully went into the rain and invited Mike to join him.
Best Friends/210 (BF)
The annual Sweetheart's Dance was approaching and Sully found all the commotion unnecessary, but when he asked Mike why she had not looked him in the eye all day, she confessed that she wanted him to ask to her to the dance. He rose and asked her and she refused, saying he had waited too long. In response, Sully said that was good because he could not dance anyway. Mike pointed out he danced the waltz in Boston and he answered that the waltz was easy but the reels tangled him up. She said she would teach him and that she really did want to go to the dance. When she tried to teach him, he did get confused but then tried to kiss her and she pulled away. He bristled and said he could not learn to dance but Mike said he could. Sully offered a deal: Mike would not try to change him and he would not try to change her. But Mike refused to accept it and he walked away. Later, she witnessed Sully going into the store when it was closed, and when he showed up with candy for her at the homestead, she was inquisitive and he secretive about what he was doing at the store. Some time later, Mike was at the store when Sully and Dorothy came from her room, obviously having a good time. Mike became jealous but Dorothy collapsed and Sully carried her to the clinic. After Dorothy's surgery, Sully came to her and realized she was jealous, and when she asked him what she was supposed to think, Sully told her she should trust him. Sully showed up late to the Sweetheart's Dance, in a suit, and as Mike's favorite dance began and she looked rather forlorn, he took her onto the dance area saying "this is your favorite dance, right?" As he executed the complicated steps, Mike asked him how he learned the dance and he said a friend had taught him, glancing at Dorothy. Mike said she was jealous and Sully agreed; Mike said it was foolish and Sully agreed; she asked if he had to agree with everything she said, and Sully kissed her.
Sully's Choice/227 (SC)
Sully was nervous about Mike cutting his hair when she learned of an influenza epidemic in Soda Springs. She wanted to go to help and Sully promised he would stay at the homestead to watch after the children. On the first day, while Sully was doing the laundry, Colleen and Brian squabbled and he took them to town. They learned the army was there to prevent dog soldiers from attacking the bridge. Sully went to Cloud Dancing to ask his help in preventing such an attack. That night, Brian could not sleep and Sully told him the story of Old Pete, a miner who found and then hid some gold. He promised Brian they would go looking for that gold in some old caves and Brian fell asleep with Sully in front of the fire. The next day, Sully took Brian to a cave, telling him that it used to be a sacred place for the Indians and to treat it with respect. He told Brian the stalactites and stalagmites, about the water collecting and the bats. As they left the cave, Sully told him not to tell anyone else about the cave. On their way home, they witnessed an Indian attack on the railroad and Sully ran down to try and stop the dog soldiers. Unknown to Sully, the army arrived and began shooting and he was shot running away from a building that immediately thereafter exploded. During the smoke and fire, Sully was able to get away and hide. Neither the army nor Brian could find him. Brian went back to town and Matthew and Robert E went back out to look for Sully. The army put a $200 bounty on Sully, dead or alive. The search party found Sully unconscious, noting that Sully had tried to stop the bleeding by using leaves, and that the bullet was still in him. They tried to take him back to the clinic but the Reverend stopped them in time, while Grace diverted the attention of the army. Robert E also diverted attention by getting down from the wagon and answering the Sergeant's request for services. The Reverend, Mathew, Brian and Colleen took Sully to the treasure cave. Colleen attempted to stop the bleeding. When Sully woke, he asked the Reverend to take the children back to town because it was not safe, but he collapsed. The Reverend went to town to get supplies and Matthew tried to reach Cloud Dancing. Meanwhile, the kids tended to Sully and Brian told him a story about a mountain man who knew how to keep a fire going in the rain, where the best fishing worms were, where the eagles live and where treasure was buried. The Reverend inadvertently led Hank back to the cave and Jake followed Matthew. Colleen heard them and in her enthusiasm for Jake's assistance, they all rush out of the cave to stop Jake and Hank. Colleen convinced Jake to help because Sully had saved his life. The Reverend "borrowed" Jake's gun to knock out Hank and they proceeded with the operation. Matthew administered the chloroform, Colleen made the incision, Jake retrieved the bullet and Colleen closed the incision. When Sully woke, he told the kids, the Reverend and Jake that he wanted to turn himself into the army because he could not run forever. They took Sully back to town while Matthew went to get the army. Sully told the town that he helped the Cheyenne with food and medicine and negotiations with the army but that he had never helped them hurt anyone and he never would. He said that folks knew him, that he never carried a gun and that his word was good. When Hank charged him with running away, Sully said he was not running then and he was not running now, and that he was telling them the truth. Matthew showed up with the army and Sully surrendered saying he was not guilty, but Dorothy intervened, saying they were arresting the wrong man. One by one, led by Robert E and Grace, the townsfolk agreed that Sully was in town the day the railroad blew up and even Hank agreed. The sergeant demanded to see Sully's back but Dorothy said her readers would like to know if the army shot an unarmed man in the back. The sergeant backed down and left, and Sully collapsed on Loren's porch from weakness and relief. When Mike arrived home, the kids told her that Sully had taken good care of them, to which he replied that they took good care of him.
Crossing the Line/212 (CTL)
Sully was in town when striking miners tried to get credit at Loren's store and argued with the mine manager. He argued for better safety for the workers, and tried to prevent violence between the striking miners and the mine operators. As tempers erupted, Sully was hit on the head by a mine guard and stunned. He woke up in time to see a burning stick of dynamite near him and used his tomahawk to cut off the burning fuse. When Matthew was determined to go to work in the mines, Sully told him that in the summer of 1859, he was working in a silver mine near Cripple Creek, Colorado, (near Colorado Springs) when he was caught in a cave-in. Sully and the other miners were trapped for 22 days and endure horrors. Matthew countered that Sully was not going to change his mind about working in the mine, and Sully said he figured that and gave him a bandana for the dust. Mike and Sully spent time at the mine site and when the mine did cave in, Sully tried to convinced the striking mine workers to go and in and rescue people. When Matthew was not found quickly, Sully decided to go in and did not argue about Mike going in and told her to put on men's clothes. He and Mike went in the mine and Sully battled his own demons. They found Matthew trapped under a rock in a cave filling with water. Sully was able to find just the right amount of dynamite to break apart the rock, but Mike was doubtful. Sully said he was a powder man and it would work. It was Matthew who told Mike to trust Sully. The explosion worked and Sully carried Matthew over his shoulder and led Mike through the tunnels while the mine collapsed behind them. At the mine entrance that had collapsed, Sully shoved Matthew and then Mike through an opening and then crawled out himself just as the entire mine collapsed. .
A Christmas Tale Dr. Mike's Dream/214 (ACTDMD)
As Sully and the family arrived at the annual Christmas party, Brian wished for snow and Sully hinted to Mike that he had made Brian a sled for Christmas. A pregnant woman needed Mike's help so Sully and the kids went on to the party. There, Hank and Jake thought that Mike and Sully made an unusual couple, and when Hank said if Mike ever needed her wick trimmed to see him, Sully said Hank could not hold a candle to Dr. Mike. Mike diverted the men looking for the pregnant woman by sending them to the party looking for Dr. Sully. When Mike did not come to the party, Sully and the kids took her some food. Sully went back out to look for the men who were the fathers to the couple. When they came in after the birth, Sully began to diffuse the situation by noting how the baby had one father's eyes. After the crisis, Mike told Sully how he and the children had saved her Christmas for her, and he pulled out the candle that Horace gave him for her. The family and Sully went out to the annual Christmas sing around the tree, but did not sing himself.
The Year: 1869
The Buffalo Soldiers/213 (BS)
Sully and Matthew were hunting and found a group of massacred Indians and one surviving little girl. He calmed her by speaking Cheyenne and took her to Mike for help. There, he found the clinic overrun by Buffalo Soldiers and told Mike the girl said those were the men who had massacred her family. The soldiers asked Sully to scout for them but he refused. Cloud Dancing said they should keep the soldiers at the clinic and Sully should scout in order to learn their plans and help protect the tribe. Sully agreed, and while he did not lead them away from trouble, always advised the troops not to proceed. The troops did anyway and it led to disaster. After Mike was arrested for treason for warning the tribe of the advancing soldiers, Sully took the Sergeant Carter to visit Black Kettle and Cloud Dancing which ultimately convinced him not to fight the Indians anymore. Mike suggested Carter feign death as a result of his wound, and Sully participated in the ruse that included burial. They spirited the new civilian away in the middle of the night.
The Circus/215 (TC)
Sully agreed to participate in the trapeze act for a travelling circus. He practiced with Mike several times, and when Mike was goaded into trying the flip, he suggested they should learn the basic transfer first. Mike asked him if she was too bossy, and Sully replied "not for me." Sully and Mike went to dinner at the invitation of Madame Heart where Heart intuited Mike and Sully's romance. During practice, they missed and Mike fell to the net so Sully dropped to the net as well and they lay together laughing. During the performance, they did the first transfer, but they did not complete the flip. They tried again and were successful.
Another Woman/216 (AW)
Sully tried to convince a reluctant Mike to take a walk in the woods and she refused. He playfully carried her onto the porch of the clinic just was the army showed up with news they had killed an Indian band and rescued a white woman. She was dressed in Indian clothes and as Mike treated her, she woke up frightened and Sully was able to talk to her by speaking in Cheyenne. He told Mike the woman had been with the Cheyenne for a long time. Mike took the woman home and Sully brought a new Indian dress for her, clearly fascinated. The woman asked him to stay the night with her, and he settled onto the floor to sit next to her while she slept, much to Mike's discomfort. The next day, Sully took the woman fishing and she finally, halting English, told him her name was Catherine and the Indians took her when she was 10 years old. Sully was moved, thinking he was 10 years old when he lost everything too. Catherine said she grew up near the ocean and Sully offered to help find her family. At the church on Sunday, Catherine collapsed, and Sully who was nearby (presumably visiting his wife's grave) carried her to the clinic. Sully helped her get settled in to a recovery room, and Catherine said she was neither white nor Indian and again Sully understood that position. Then Catherine kissed him and he briefly responded and then pulled away, but Brian witnessed the event. Brian confronted Sully in the barn and did not understand when Sully said it took two to kiss. Later, Sully went to talk to Catherine, also in the barn, but she started talking about how grateful she was. She gave him a necklace, and in Cheyenne custom, he gave her a necklace in return. The next day, Mike confronted Sully, saying Brian had told her about the kiss and Catherine said she was going to stay with Sully. In her anger, Mike twisted every answer Sully gave. He told her that he did not mean for the kiss to happen and he did not know Brian witnessed it. He said he gave the gift because Catherine gave him one. He said he did care for Catherine and any man would find her beautiful. Sully tried to explain that Mike had been pulling away from him and was always too busy for him, but he did not want another woman. When Mike said she wanted to know if he had been with other women since Abagail died, he looked at her and then said no, she did not want to know, and then walked off. At his lean-to, Catherine came to Sully and told him her heart was his. With emotion, Sully told her his heart was with Mike. As Catherine departed on the stagecoach, she tried to give Sully back the necklace, but he told her to keep it to remember him. Sully followed Mike and tried to talk to her. Sully said he would have chosen Mike over Catherine, and that he would not have let anything happen between them. Mike said something had happened to his heart, and said she was not angry but hurt because he betrayed her trust in him. She told him that she could not be with him right now, but then hugged him. Sully told her that he would always be there for her, and slowly turned and walked away.
Luck of the Draw/217 (LOTD)
Sully was helping Matthew build his homestead when Sully's canteen began leaking and the hacksaw broke. Later that night, Sully had a tensely quiet dinner with the family as they waited for Matthew to come home. Sully tried to explain to Mike that Matthew was growing up. When he did arrive, he had gifts for everyone, including a new canteen for Sully. Sully told Matthew playing poker was all right depending with whom you were playing. The next day, Sully was helping unload the wagon at the clinic when Matthew came by, and Sully told him a widow had a tree stump that needed to be removed. Later, Sully was repairing furniture from the clinic on the porch when Matthew came back and Sully told him the widow said he had not been by. Sully and Mike tried to dissuade Matthew from playing poker, and Sully said that the Cheyenne only play for sport. Matthew disagreed and went to play poker. That night, Sully found Matthew near the saloon, beaten and the money stolen. He helped take Matthew to the clinic for Mike. Later that day, Sully helped Brian try to free the eagle Brian bought from Loren. When the eagle did not fly away, Sully told Brian that the Cheyenne believe the eagles bring wisdom and perhaps there was a reason why the eagle was staying. During the big game, Sully entered the saloon to watch and saw Matthew gamble with the engagement ring Mike had given Matthew for Ingrid. Sully left the saloon before he saw how the hand turned out because he knew what would happen. That night, the Reverend, Robert E and Sully approached the professional gambler. As the gambler said a rude thing to Robert E, Sully threw his tomahawk into the wall but near the gambler which made him stop. Although the gambler had not yet agreed to give back Matthew's stolen money, Sully said as long as they were settling up, there was something he wanted to buy, and the gambler agreed. Sully approached Matthew and asked how he was, and told Matthew that a man can never grow unless he makes mistakes and learns from them. Sully gave Matthew the money stolen from him, and when Matthew asked why Sully was giving it to him, Sully said it was his. Then Sully went to Mike, who knew of the effort to get back the stolen money. Mike asked why he gave it back to Matthew and Sully asked in return who did Mike suggest he give it to. Sully gave Mike the ring, and told her he had seen this sickness in the mining camps, when a man could only see the things the money could buy. The next day, Sully, Mike, Brian and Colleen rode out to Matthew's homestead to help him and to set the eagle free. The family gathered to watch the eagle soar, but Sully did not embrace Mike. There remained a distant uneasiness between Sully and Mike.
Life and Death/218 (L&D)
Sully was invited to dinner with the family and Dorothy, her son, Tom, and Loren, and knew of General "Uncle Bill" Sheridan and the destruction of Atlanta. When Tom got up to leave with out his cane, Sully handed it to him, then sat down, nibbled on a sugar cube and appeared to have reservations about Tom. When Mike shot Tom in self-defense because he was looking for morphine at the homestead one night, Matthew reached Sully and he came to the clinic as Mike finished the operation. She confessed her fears to him, and he said she had done her best each time, defending her children and saving Tom's life. Later that day, Sully went to the homestead to find Colleen home from school, scrubbing the floor and very upset. He said he'd take care of it, and then took her to the clinic. He looked at Colleen disapprovingly when she lied to Mike. Later, when Mike knew she had to amputate Tom's leg, Sully administered the chloroform and offered to do the operation, but Mike refused. The next morning, Sully came to the homestead to take Colleen and Brian to school. He told Matthew that they both had done their best and that they should not look back. Then he talked to Brian about how real guns hurt people and that people have to live with the consequences. Even though he offered to take her and pick her up, Colleen refused to go to school. Sully went to Mike who was questioning the use of morphine and Sully said he had seen men like Tom, going town to town, begging, borrowing and stealing to get it. He suggested they see Cloud Dancing. But then Sully told her that Colleen was very upset and Mike had been too busy to see. They went to the cabin to find Colleen very upset and holding the rifle at them; Sully grabbed it and went outside to Mike and Colleen could talk. Then Mike and Sully went to see Cloud Dancing. Later, back at the clinic, Sully sat with Tom as Mike tried to wean him from the morphine, and held Tom down when he became violent at Dorothy.
The First Circle/221 (FC)
Sully was in town when Robert E and Grace bought the house from Jedadiah Bancroft, the banker from Denver. That night, he was with the family at the homestead, carving, and said Loren was bigoted because of the way he treated the Indians and immigrants. Sully did not know anything about the new social club to which Matthew had been invited. Sully was at the clinic the next night when Matthew brought a beaten Robert E for treatment, and warned Robert E the next morning as he left the clinic to continue working on his house. Sully came running from another part of town when the mob drenched Robert E in paint and demanded to know who had done it, but Robert E refused his help. At night, the KKK destroyed the café and Sully came running to defend it, tackled a man, and was hit on the head and stunned. The next morning, he helped clean up the mess. Later, he brought Dorothy's new edition of the Gazette to Mike and Grace. The day the KKK attached Grace and cut her hair, Robert E and Grace came to dinner and spent the night in the barn. The KKK set afire a cross in front of the homestead, and Sully ran out, yelling, "get off my land" and brandishing his tomahawk. The next morning, Sully offered to stay with them but Robert E refused. Sully and Mike entered the saloon to confront Mr. Bancroft, and when Bancroft threatened the children, Sully said if he harmed the children, Sully would kill him. The look Sully gave Bancroft and his henchmen made them all back down and nervous. Sully and Mike went to the clinic where they talked about their fears for the children and themselves, and how hard it was to stand up for Robert E and Grace. But they asked the children what to do, and each agreed they should help, so they all did. That night, Robert E was abducted, and Sully, Mike, Matthew and Grace went to the site. Sully and Matthew rushed the crowd and were held back, but Mike was able to give her speech. As men softened and Bancroft still tried to hang Robert E, Sully broke lose and with his tomahawk, said he thought he would make good on his promise to Bancroft. He raised the tomahawk at Bancroft, but then threw it to severe the hanging rope. The next day, Sully and the family helped Robert E and Grace move into their house.
Just One Lullaby/224 (JOL)
Sully was away hunting, and when he returned, he found Brian having a tantrum next to the clinic. Sully asked him what was wrong, and when he refused to talk, took him to the café for pie. Sully was at the homestead when Brian had another tantrum and held him. Sully attended the town meeting to talk about the new teacher's use of physical punishment, but left to talk to the Reverend on the front porch and poke holes in the Reverend's decision not to vote on the question of retention for the new teacher. Sully rode home with the family from the meeting, and saw the welts on Brian's leg, so he rode with Mike to see Miss Chandler at the schoolhouse. There, they found her beaten and Sully carried her to the clinic. On Sunday, Sully wore his suit to church as the Reverend told the story of the King's child in a small village.
The Abduction/219/220 (A)
Part I: Sully was at the reservation and had just won a contest throwing tomahawks when Mike arrived a day early with army supplies and an army escort. Sully knew Dog Soldiers were in camp and offered to help unload the supplies in order to get the soldiers away quickly. The soldiers saw evidence of the Dog Soldiers and were killed. Sully stopped One Eye from hurting Mike when she objected to the taking of the soldier's affects. Sully told Mike that she had to forget what she saw at the reservation if she wanted to protect the village. In town, Sully remained silent when Custer rode in and questioned Mike about the fate of the soldiers and she answered the questions literally. At the café, Mike began to relent about telling the truth and Sully again urged her to protect the village, noting that the army and Indians were at war. When she said she would tell the truth next time, he walked away. When Custer found evidence of her knowledge, Mike was forced to admit she saw the soldiers killed by Dog Soldiers but protected Sully's knowledge of the event. When Custer promised retaliation against the village, Mike and Sully went to warn Cloud Dancing and the others. Walks on Clouds did not understand the betrayal and pronounced Mike and Sully his enemies. Sometime later, Sully was preparing a snare for trapping in the woods when he saw the Dog Soldiers riding towards town; he ran to town to warn Mike just as the Dog Soldiers arrived and set fire to various buildings. Sully put out the fire on the clinic balcony by chopping away the burning railing and stomping out the remaining fire. The next day, Sully tried to dissuade Mike from going after a woman with a broken leg but when she insisted, he went with her. As they approached the cabin, the Dog Soldiers attacked and they raced to the cabin and went inside. Mike urged Sully to escape without her and he refused, just as one Dog Soldier broke in the door. Sully shoved Mike aside and tried to stop the Dog Soldier. While he struggled against a knife, other Dog Soldiers took Mike. Sully finally defeated the one Dog Soldier with a kick to the face, but was stopped in following by rifle fire and instructed Wolf to follow her. Then, he yelled after the departing Dog Soldiers in Cheyenne, and then yelled her name, saying he would find her. He dropped to his knees in frustration and despair.
Part II: Sully drove the wagon back to town and asked for Robert E's fastest horse and promised Colleen and Brian he would find Mike. He refused help and protection from Custer and insisted on riding alone because he could travel faster. Sully followed the tracks that led to a river next to a cliff and Mike warned him by knocking some rocks over the cliff. Walks on Clouds said that they would trade Mike for the villagers that Custer had taken captive, which was news to Sully. He instructed Wolf to continue following Mike and rode back to Colorado Springs where he found Cloud Dancing and the others captive. Sully told Custer to set the Indians free and asked if he was at war with women, children and old men. He told Custer of the Dog Soldier's offer to release Mike in return for the villagers, and Custer refused, saying if Mike were not returned, he would begin hanging the people as soon as the gallows could be constructed. Sully went to another Indian village and pleaded with the women there to tell him if they had seen Mike. He spoke extensive Cheyenne, and said she was his heart song. A grandmother told him information and gave him Walks on Clouds beads, and Sully knew Walks on Clouds was dead. Sully ran through the woods, scaled a cliff, and when he did not know which direction to go, he fell to his knees and implored the spirits for help. Mike felt his presence and he heard her cry in that of a hawk. He found the Dog Soldiers leading a shoeless Mike, but waited until dark. Mike knew Sully was near when he used the call of an owl and she made an excuse to have One Eye take her near the river. One Eye tried to attack her but Sully flew at him, and in a struggle, knocked him out. He cut Mike's bonds and carried her into the river and they swam away. He found a cave where they rested. While Mike slept on a bed of pine needles, Sully found honey and berries for food and set their clothes out to dry. She woke the next afternoon and Sully assured her she was safe. When she seemed to want to kiss him, he offered her the honey and berries and told her that if they left now, they could be in Colorado Springs by tomorrow afternoon. Mike said she could not walk because of the injuries to her feet, and Sully began to clean them, saying he would carry her. Sully summoned his courage and asked Mike if they had hurt her, really asking if the Dog Soldiers had raped her. She almost smiled and said no, and Sully's enormous relief led him to look at her and kiss her. She asked to be held, and he did, rocking gently. As Mike and Sully were trying to get back to Colorado Springs, the Dog Soldiers found them and chased them up a hill to a cliff. One Eye was waiting for them at the top and Sully struggled with him, and in self-defense, was able to throw him over the cliff. But the other Dog Soldiers moved in, and Mike and Sully realized their only hope was to jump off the cliff into the river. As they prepared, Sully told Mike he loved her and she responded that she loved him. They jumped and survived, and swam down river to safety. Wolf was waiting at the riverbank, and they found Sully's horse. Mike rode behind Sully back to Colorado Springs, arriving just as Custer lined up the first group of villagers for hanging. The children greeted Mike and as Custer gave the order to proceed with the hanging, Sully threw his tomahawk so that the master lever could not be pulled. He yelled at Custer that he had given his word to release the Indians if Mike was returned, and Custer reluctantly relented. Sully gave Cloud Dancing Walks on Cloud's beads and told him that One Eye had killed Walks on Clouds, and Mike said that he died saving her life so she could save Cloud Dancing's life. Cloud Dancing left with the other villagers, and Sully escorted Mike away. Several days later, at Brian's birthday party, Mike thanked Sully for saving her life, and he kissed her and said that they could not miss a birthday party.
(Comments: during this adventure, Sully's feather comes more and more bedraggled, and it is finally lost.)
The Campaign/222 (TC)
When Mike decided to run for mayor, Sully tried to dissuade her, telling her politics was a dirty business and she would not have time for courting. She said they would resume courting after the election. Mike was even too busy to go with Sully to the reservation for a ritual for Snow Bird. Sully was in town when a customer knifed Myra on the leg. He went in her saloon room through the window and rescued Myra, carrying her to the clinic. He and Colleen tried to administer to Myra until Mike showed up. But after seeing her struggle, Sully changed his mind. He went to her with flowers and said he had a plan. On election day, Sully came to vote. A large number of women showed up, including Myra, and said that Sully had deeded a small portion of his homestead to each of them, making them property owners and thus eligible to vote. Horace confirmed it was legal. Despite the additional women voters, Mike lost and Sully said she would have made a great mayor.
Man in the Moon/223 (MITM)
Sully was repairing the roof of the homestead when Mike began talking about Myra and Horace. She noted Horace was upset when the ring did not arrive in time for the engagement party, and Sully said that a ring did not matter if two people loved each other. He said a man shows he loves a woman by working for her love every day. When Mike begins talking of how Myra wants all the magic of the proposal and the wedding, the white dress, cutting the cake, throwing the bouquet, Sully realizes that Mike is talking about herself. When Mike notes that Myra will attend church for the first time on Horace's arm, Sully said he wanted to take Mike to church on his arm. While attending Myra and Horace's engagement party, Sully threw a log and struck Hank in the head in order to prevent Hank shooting Myra. He was in the clinic when Hank woke up, who threatened to take care of Sully later. Sully confronted Mike about her anger when Myra chose to tend Hank rather than obey Horace, and suggested that she was angry at Hank instead. When Mike confessed that she has not cared for Hank as a person, Sully told her that sometimes darkness comes over the moon but that the light is always there. He said he knows she has that light and to trust it will come back. Sully wore a suit to the church when Myra told the town they did not care.
Return Engagement/225/226 (RE)
Part I: Mike and Sully were on a walk when Mike seemed pensive and unsure of Sully's love, and he told her he loved her and kissed her hand. When the returned to town, they met Andrew Strauss who wanted to employ Sully as a guide. Sully seemed to enjoy Strauss, and took him to see a herd of wild elk where there was a challenge for leadership of the herd. The two men noted the differences in the natural instinct of the elk and human behavior. Strauss told Sully of a wilderness area Congress had created in California and Sully said they needed one in Colorado. When Sully and Strauss returned to town, they found the townsfolk gathered, and Sully introduced Strauss to Myra and Horace, and ended up volunteering to be Horace's best man since Mike had volunteered to be Myra's maid of honor. Later, Mike and the children gave Sully a bicycle, and he learned to ride the bike around town. Just then, Cloud Dancing came and told them he was going on a vision quest with Snow Bird to understand why Walks on Clouds had died. This news disturbed Sully because Cloud Dancing said he did not know when he would return. The next day, Sully was suppose to take Andrew to find wild orchids but was late. Sully found Mike and Andrew in the valley and said he was late because he had to tend to his traps. He refused to take find them further, saying that the ground was wet. He hid from Mike the fact that he did not feel good but Andrew noticed. The next day, Sully was also supposed to take Andrew out, but Andrew said he had seen him in town, acting strangely. She went to find Sully at his lean-to and diagnosed his migraine. At first, he said he did not want to bother her, and when she insisted, he asked about the clinic, which she closed, and about the children whom she told she would be away for a few days. Mike doctored him, and at one point he lamented that he might never see Cloud Dancing again. When the migraine did not subside, Mike said Cloud Dancing would say that they had to treat the whole person, and Sully said such healings always started with a sweat lodge. They went to such a sweat lodge, and Mike prepared the fire and the steam, and Sully sprinkled the gift of tobacco and prayed to Grandfather for healing. In his sleep, Sully had a vision of Cloud Dancing who showed him an approaching Mike and then receded. The vision showed Sully embracing Mike and enjoying being with her, but then she rose and walked away. He called out her name, and Mike, waiting outside the sweat lodge, ran inside to see what was wrong. When Sully was convinced that he was not dreaming, he said to her that he needed her, that he would love her all his days, and asked her to marry him. Mike said yes and they kissed.
Part II: The next day, Sully asked the children for their permission to marry their ma, and they enthusiastically approved. Sully said he wanted to build them a new house and they all agreed to keep their news quiet until after Myra and Horace's wedding. As the wedding day came, the family came into town and found Andrew about to leave. Sully convinced him to stay and attend the wedding. When a drunken Horace slipped and revealed that Mike and Sully were to wed, Andrew gave a toast and then left quickly. Mike, who had begun to have suspicions, followed and confronted Andrew, who finally confessed he was David, her supposedly dead fiancé, all of which Sully overheard. Sully took Mike home, and later than evening she told him of the news, and he asked her what she wanted to do. She asked David to stay and Sully found him at dinner one night. Sully became angry for David's deception and as he was leaving, David reached out to stop him and they scuffled. Matthew broke it up and David offered to leave but Mike said he should stay. A hurt Sully said the engagement was off and left. The next day, Sully came to a school concert and talked with Mike, saying that if she were not part of his life, there was no reason for him to stay. After David assisted with surgery on Grace's eyes, Sully approached him and apologized for his anger. As they walked through the meadow, David told of how he came to Colorado Springs, and Sully said that when he lost Abagail and Hannah, he figured he'd be alone the rest of his days. That night, Sully went to the homestead and told Mike that he loved her, that she knew he would die for her, but that most of all, he wanted her to be happy. Thus, he said, she should choose who ever made her happy, and he would support her choice. Mike, overwhelmed, hugged him. The next day, Sully was helping Brian learn to ride the bike, setting his course and letting him go. He would not stay for supper, and in conversation with the kids, Mike learned that Sully had told them to support Mike in her choice. Mike finally decided and went to Sully's lean-to to tell him. She found him chopping wood, assuming that she had chosen David. When she finally told him she wanted him, he played hard to get, and asked if he would what, forcing Mike to make a marriage proposal. She did and he turned, walked slowly towards her, took her hands and said yes. Then he led her into the meadow and swung her into his arms.
